While on patrol on Sept. 8, Clay Township police witnessed a vehicle that was crossing over both the fog line and the center line while traveling along M-29, according to a police report. Officers eventually conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for the lane violations and made contact with the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. During the encounter, officers noted a faint odor of intoxicants on her breath, but she denied drinking. The officer continued his investigation and the driver admitted to drinking a glass of wine at dinner but said she had nothing else since. The driver was removed from the vehicle and sobriety evaluations were administered, which she failed. She was taken into custody for operating while intoxicated. She was transported to the Clay Township Police Department for processing and her vehicle was towed from the location without incident.

Clay Township police were dispatched to the area of Dixie Highway and Hamlin Beach Drive on Sept. 10 in response to a report of a hit-and-run traffic crash, according to a police report. Officers were told that a Jeep had struck a mailbox, causing damage, and then left the area. With the help of a citizen who wanted to remain anonymous, officers were able to locate the Jeep that caused the damage and make contact with the owner. The driver of the Jeep said she was driving down the road and her mirror broke, smashing against the passenger window and causing the window to shatter, but she said she did not think she hit anything. Photos of her vehicle were taken and her insurance information was collected. Officers then went to the location of the mailbox and found two separate mailboxes to be damaged from the incident. The owners were supplied the report information and photos were collected for the report. Officers did not take any further action at the time.

Clay Township police were dispatched to check the area of Dyke Road near Colony Drive on Sept. 8 in response to a report of a white Mustang that was “all over the road,” according to a police report. Officers responded to the area and located the described vehicle. The officer witnessed the vehicle cross the fog line a few times and conducted a traffic stop for the lane violations. Contact was made with the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. After speaking with the driver and seeing no signs of impairment, she was issued a warning for the violations and released. Officers determined no further actions were needed.

A subject came into the Clay Township Police Department on Sept. 7 to report fraudulent activity, according to a police report. The citizen said she was contacted by individuals claiming to be representatives of Microsoft and Northstar Bank and that they notified her that her computer and phone had been hacked and that she needed to provide them with Bitcoin and Home Depot gift cards in order to not lose any more money. She complied at first, but after the individuals insisted on more money, she realized it was a scam and reported it to her bank and to the police department. The Clay Township Police Department would like to remind everyone that scams are out there and that if people receive similar calls, they should hang up immediately.
