The exhibit explores the layers, complications, and duality of juxtaposing contemporary O'Odham with traditional narratives and ancestral ties to the Phoenix basin and throughout the Sonoran Desert. This exhibit was generously funded by the Friends of Pueblo Grande Museum. Thomas 'Breeze' Marcus has been spray-painting large-scale murals throughout the City of Phoenix for nearly three decades. He is also a studio painter and has done work for various museum collections and exhibits throughout the country. Marcus' art is directly inspired by graffiti, public art, contemporary Native issues, and his Akimel and Tohono O'Odham heritage. By finding and creating parallels in his artwork, Marcus carries on a long lineage of creative and innovative history in the Phoenix area. When Rez Dogs Howl will be on display at Pueblo Grande Museum from July 7, 2022 to May 14, 2023. This incident occurred in the area of 19th Avenue and Southern Avenue. An officer was at a gas station in the area, working through an unrelated call for service, when he was notified by a community member about a man nearby who was waiving a machete. The officer saw the adult male suspect walk south along 19th Avenue on the sidewalk waving the machete around, before eventually walking into a vacant dirt lot. The officer called for backup and tried to keep the suspect contained to the dirt lot, away from any other community members. The second officer arrived on scene and positioned herself and her vehicle between the suspect and 19th Avenue in an attempt to keep him away from the roadway, which was busy with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The suspect ignored the officer and continued walking southbound along 19th Avenue, and eventually into the roadway. The third officer to arrive on scene retrieved a less lethal stunbag shotgun from his patrol vehicle before approaching the suspect. He gave multiple commands for the suspect to drop the weapon, and then used the stunbag shotgun when the suspect approached him. The stunbag rounds had minimal effect on the suspect, causing him only to pause for a moment before advancing toward the officer again. At this point, the officer dropped the stunbag and fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect and causing him to fall to the ground. When the suspect fell to the ground, he dropped the machete. Officers were able to move it away as they approached him to take him into custody and begin first-aid. The officers continued to provide aid until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived and assumed care before transporting the suspect to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect remains hospitalized, and upon release, will be booked into jail for aggravated assault on a police officer. The officer involved in this shooting has been with the department for 2 years and is assigned to the South Mountain Precinct. Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete. An internal investigation by the Professional Standard Bureau is currently underway, in addition to a criminal investigation. Once the criminal investigation is complete it will then be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Public records law required redaction of certain personal identifying information before video is released publicly. The new 'Blue Bank' is a partnership between the city, the <a target="_blank" href="https://thebluebank.org/" title="BlueCommons Fund">New Venture Fund's BlueCommons</a> project, and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation's <a target="_blank" href="https://businessforwater.org/about" title="Business for Water Stewardship">Business for Water Stewardship</a> (BWS) program. BlueCommons and BWS will provide loans to qualified companies that want to incorporate cooling tower projects in their own buildings and campuses. A highly successful, large-scale cooling tower water treatment technology pioneered at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is the basis of this grant program. Cooling towers are used in industry-scale air conditioning systems – like those at the airport. Because of the hard water in the Phoenix area, corrosion happens quickly, clogging the system with mineral deposits. The deposits reduce efficiency of the systems, causing them to use more water; they can also require harsh chemicals to remove. By using ingenuity and experimentation, engineers at the airport found that by combining a water softening system with an environmentally friendly disinfectant generator on the cooling towers at Terminal 3, 4, and the Rental Car Center, the results were dramatic. There was a vast reduction in the chemicals needed to keep the pipes clean, and a savings of 31 million gallons of water in Terminal 4 alone. Plus, cooling water can now cycle through the towers 3.5 to six times before it must be discarded – another significant improvement. Through the non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) approved Wednesday, Phoenix will be responsible for identifying companies that are potentially ready to adopt this technology.
